A Few Old Dartington Hall School Photos - Alastair McKenzie
I took a handful of photos while I was at Dartington. These are all the photos I've still got featuring friends and fellow students at Foxhole, at the Old Postern, and away from the school.
Sorry. They are mostly terrible quality and pretty boring, but there may be some memories among them for you. And better on the web than in a box in the attic! There are a number of faces I can't put names to. You can email me if you know, or if I've got them wrong.
This page was originally a remote page accessed from a link on the Dartington Hall School website (www.dartingtonhallschool.co.uk). That's why it is just a simple hand-coded page without any fancy dressing. I had to move it to a new server but the original link on the DHS site wasn't updated with the new url so this is now a standalone archive page. I only mention it because some of you seem to have found your way here independently via search engine queries and you might be wondering about the context.
If you see a little red star, it means: * Self-indulgent anecdote attached
Summer Term 1973
Most of the pics I have were shot around the same time, Jul 73, and the majority were taken on the last day of the summer term.
The motorcycles and the people gathered around them at the Old Postern also feature in a 15-minute movie I shot on the last day of that term. It ends with everybody with everybody from Foxhole & the Old Postern on the platform at Totnes station waiting for the London train. I've said that Anne (Hooper) can have it for the archive (a few years ago I also offered it to the Dartington Hall Trust Archive, but they couldn't even be bothered to reply), but it needs to be converted from 8mm film to a digital format. That way anybody who is interested can see it. If anyone can help with that, please let me know.
I wasn't taking pictures of particular friends. I seem to remember using my stills camera and borrowing the movie camera because I thought I should record faces at Dartington. With both, I just shot anybody who happened to be around and wandered in front of the lens!

Dartmoor 1973
A small group of us drove up to Dartmoor. I don't remember much about the trip and I'm not very clear when it was. One of the pics has July 73 written on the back but this simply doesn't look like July weather to me!

Cornwall 1972
I think this would have been my second term at Dartington. There was a small school camping trip to Boscastle in Cornwall. It certainly wasn't warm, so my guess is that it was the Spring term 72.
Neil Baxendale saw these pics and wrote to say he remembered the trip as something of a washout - it rained continuously and we all went home early. Oh yea....and he had acute toothache! Sadly, a little while after getting in touch, Neil died from a heart attack on 30th December 2003.
Some help confirming names would be welcome on this group.

Corsica 1973
A bunch of us (seven, I think) went on holiday together to Corsica. William Capon had been a Dartington pupil before us, and was still based in the area. His parents had a small villa near Ajaccio. We had the place to ourselves. I think it was the first holiday I went on by myself (ie without an 'adult'), and presumably it was the same for the others.

God know why I took these inspiring photos!
But perhaps even more of a mystery... why did I keep them?

The first three of these were taken at dinner at my parent's home in Torquay. Deya and Tori and I had driven over for the evening. |
